چکیده

We analyze the reflection and transmission coefficients calculated from transfer matrix simulations on finite lengths of electromagnetic metamaterials, to determine the effective permittivity ~«! and permeability ~m!. We perform this analysis on structures composed of periodic arrangements of wires, split ring resonators ~SRRs!, and both wires and SRRs. We find the recovered frequency-dependent « and m are entirely consistent with analytic expressions predicted by effective medium arguments. Of particular relevance are that a wire medium exhibits a frequency region in which the real part of « is negative, and SRRs produce a frequency region in which the real part of m is negative. In the combination structure, at frequencies where both the recovered real parts of « and m are simultaneously negative, the real part of the index of refraction is also found to be unambiguously negative.

Determination of the effective constitutive parameters of bianisotropic metamaterials from reflection and transmission coefficients.

We propose a method to retrieve the effective constitutive parameters of a slab of bianisotropic metamaterial from reflection and transmission coefficients (or scattering parameters). In our retrieval method, only the scattering parameters in one propagation direction are used. Analytical inversion equations are derived in order to retrieve the effective parameters of the permittivity, permeabi...

Analysis of nonlocal effective permittivity and permeability in symmetric metal– dielectric multilayer metamaterials

A generalized nonlocal effective medium theory is derived based on the transfer-matrix method to determine the nonlocal effective permittivity and permeability for the symmetric and periodic metal–dielectric multilayer metamaterials, with respect to both transverse-electric and transversemagnetic polarized light at arbitrary angle of incidence. The nonlocal effective permittivity and permeabili...

Transmission and Reflection Characteristics of a Concrete Block Wall Illuminated by a TM-polarized Obliquely incident wave

Typically, many of the modern buildings have concrete walls constructed from cinder block walls, that have periodic nature in their relative dielectric constant. This periodic nature excites higher-order Floquet harmonic modes at microwave frequencies, which leads to the propagation of scattered waves along with non-specular directions. Periodic structures exhibit different behaviors when illum...

Transmission and Reflection Properties of Composite Double Negative Metamaterials in Free Space

We report free space transmission and the first reflection measurements of a composite double negative (DNG) metamaterial, also known as a left-handed material (LHM). The metamaterial composes of the split-ring-resonators and discontinuous thin wires. Very high transmission values of the metamaterial are observed within a frequency range for which both effective permeability and permittivity ar...

On the Definition of Effective Permittivity and Permeability For Thin Composite Layers

The problem of definition of effective material parameters (permittivity and permeability) for composite layers containing only one-two parallel arrays of complex-shaped inclusions is discussed. Such structures are of high importance for the design of novel metamaterials, where the realizable layers quite often have only one or two layers of particles across the sample thickness. Effective para...
